Often, the first step taken to clarify the underlying cause of your symptoms is an allergy skin test. Spirometry, a measurement of breathing, is also available in the diagnosis and treatment of asthma.

Based on the results of history and testing, the doctor and patient formulate a plan that includes education, discussion of techniques to avoid allergens, and possible prescription of medications aimed to treat the specific problem.

In some cases where allergic symptoms are especially bothersome or persistent, the allergist may suggest a program of allergy immunotherapy, or shots. During follow up care, the doctor and patient will reassess and update the treatment plan as needed.
