Hospitalists are medical doctors who are dedicated to the care of patients while hospitalized. Hospitalists are knowledgeable about the hospital’s systems and provide diagnostic evaluations, on-site availability and communication with the other physicians involved. This “hands-on” approach typically results in better use of hospital resources and greater patient satisfaction.

Because hospital care is increasingly complex, Kelsey-Seybold Clinic has created a team of 12 hospitalist physicians, including pediatric hospitalists. These physicians see patients at several hospitals, including St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital, Texas Children’s Hospital and The Woman’s Hospital of Texas. The hospitalist model is used nationwide at such prestigious academic institutions as Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, both Harvard Medical School Teaching Affiliates; Rochester Methodist Hospital and Saint Mary’s Hospital, serving only Mayo Clinic patients; and the Cleveland Clinic Florida.

The Kelsey-Seybold Clinic Hospitalist Program provides specialized, efficient and coordinated care for our hospitalized patients. The hospitalist observes his or her patient's status, progress and tests results up to several times a day, as needed. “The Hospitalists provide care for hospitalized patients, while the patients’ primary care physicians continue to provide outpatient care,” notes Tony Lin, MD, Hospitalist Managing Physician and Chief of Internal Medicine at Kelsey-Seybold.
