Doctors of optometry examine people’s eyes to diagnose vision problems and eye diseases. Optometrists, also known as doctors of optometry, or ODs, provide primary vision care for children and adults.
Like ophthalmologists, optometrists examine eyes and prescribe eyeglasses and contact lenses. They also use instruments and observation to examine eye health and to test a patient’s visual acuity, depth and color perception, as well as the ability to focus and coordinate the eyes. Unlike ophthalmologists, optometrists do not perform eye surgery. Our optometrists are therapeutic optometrists and are licensed to treat, as well as diagnose, many medical eye conditions.
Kelsey-Seybold’s optometrists and ophthalmologists often coordinate a patient’s eye care, with the ophthalmologist performing the surgery and the optometrist continuing to provide primary eye care.
Optometrists also diagnose conditions due to systemic diseases, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, and refer patients to other health practitioners as needed.
